Prompting

Prompt engineering

The skill of writing clear, complete instructions so an AI gives you a useful answer. Less a dark art, more a repeatable recipe.

The five-part prompt recipe Role, task, context, examples, and format combine into a strong prompt. FIVE-PART RECIPE Role Task Context Examples Format A strong prompt

Prompt engineering is just writing good instructions for AI. The name sounds technical, but it is a skill anyone can learn: say who the AI should be, what you want, the context it needs, an example, and the shape of the answer. Clear in, useful out.

It matters because the prompt is the biggest lever you control. Same model, better instructions, better result. And it is not one-and-done: you write, read, steer, and repeat (iteration).

Often confused with: Coding, or a secret set of magic words. It is plain-language instruction-writing, not programming, and there are no hidden trigger phrases.
