# Prompt engineering

> The skill of writing clear, complete instructions so an AI gives you a useful answer. Less a dark art, more a repeatable recipe.

**Prompt engineering is just writing good instructions for AI.** The name sounds technical, but it is a skill anyone can learn: say who the AI should be, what you want, the context it needs, an example, and the shape of the answer. Clear in, useful out.

It matters because **the [prompt](/glossary#prompt) is the biggest lever you control.** Same model, better instructions, better result. And it is not one-and-done: you write, read, steer, and repeat ([iteration](/glossary#iteration)).

## At work

Turning 'write a report' into 'draft a five-bullet update for my manager on Q2 sales, under 150 words' is prompt engineering. Thirty seconds that saves three rounds of edits.

## Often confused with

Coding, or a secret set of magic words. It is plain-language instruction-writing, not programming, and there are no hidden trigger phrases.
