Core concept

Generative AI

AI that creates new content, text, images, or code, by predicting what should come next from patterns it has learned.

Generative AI predicts the next piece, over and over Given the start of a sentence, the model scores candidate next words and picks the most likely one, then repeats. The report shows NEXT WORD? strong 0.6 steady 0.3 mixed 0.1 shows strong

Generative AI is the kind behind tools like Claude. Rather than sorting or scoring, it produces: a paragraph, a summary, a picture, a snippet of code. It works by predicting the next piece over and over, which is why it is so fluent, and why it can sometimes sound confident while being wrong.

It is a branch of machine learning focused on making things. When people say "AI" in 2026, this is usually what they mean.

Often confused with: AI as a whole, and machine learning. Generative AI is the make-new-content branch, not every kind of AI and not every kind of machine learning.

See it in a lesson: What is AI?
