**There is no single best AI tool, the same way there is no single best vehicle.** A van, a bike and a sports car are all "best", depending on whether you are moving house, nipping to the shop or showing off. So the useful question is not *which is best* but **which fits this job, and where do I already work?** This page compares the five names you will keep hearing, honestly, so you can pick with confidence.
The good news: for most everyday tasks, several of these tools do a fine job. You are not making a life decision. Below is a quick table, then each tool in turn, what it costs, and how to choose without getting stuck.

## Each tool, honestly
**ChatGPT is the great all-rounder.** It started the stampede and is still the most widely used, with the biggest bag of tricks: strong writing and reasoning, image generation, voice conversations and a huge library of add-ons. If you want one familiar tool that does a bit of everything and everyone around you already uses, this is the safe default. The trade-off is that the range can feel sprawling, with a confusing ladder of model names, and, like all these tools, it can sound confident when it is wrong.
**Claude is built for careful, high-quality writing and reasoning.** It is the tool this Academy teaches, so we will be plain about why and fair about the rest. Claude's reputation is for a natural, human tone, steadiness over long and complex documents, and genuinely strong coding. It leans hard into doing real work: building documents and small apps you can keep (**artifacts**), writing code (**Claude Code**), and working directly with the files on your computer. Its add-on ecosystem is smaller than ChatGPT's or Google's, and image generation is not its focus. Reach for it when tone, nuance and judgement matter.
**Gemini's trump card is Google itself.** It plugs into Search, Android and Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Sheets), handles text, images and audio together, and can hold an enormous amount of text at once, which is handy for very long documents. Google has been cutting prices hard, so it often gives a lot for the money. The experience can feel less consistent from task to task, and the plan line-up shifts often.
**Copilot is already at your desk.** It sits inside Microsoft 365, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams, and, crucially for companies, it can work with *your organisation's own* emails, files and chats through Microsoft Graph. So it can draft from last week's Teams thread or summarise the deck in your own drive, which a general chatbot cannot see. The value is tied to living in the Microsoft world, and it is usually a paid business add-on rather than a cheap personal tool.
**Perplexity is an answer engine, not a chatbot.** It searches the live web and hands back a written answer with **clickable citations on every claim**, so you can check where each fact came from. For research and anything that must be current, that sourcing beats a model relying on training it finished months ago. It is less suited to long creative writing; it is built to find and cite, not to be your all-day writing partner.
## What about price?
Roughly, and this changes often: the personal paid tier lands around **20 dollars a month** for ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, Google AI Pro and Perplexity Pro, each with a **free tier** to try first. Higher Pro or Max tiers (100 to 200 dollars a month) exist for heavy users. Copilot is the exception: it is mainly a **business add-on**, around 30 dollars per user per month, and only pays off if your team lives in Microsoft 365.
The honest takeaway on money: **start free, then pay for the one tool you reach for daily.** For most people one paid subscription is plenty. Do not collect them like stamps.
## How to choose without getting stuck
You do not need the perfect answer today, because the field will look different in six months. Three rules keep you flexible.
**Pick one main tool and get good at it.** Depth beats dabbling. The person who knows one tool well runs rings around the person with five open tabs and shallow habits in each.
**Keep your work portable.** Your prompts, your context files, your saved examples: keep them somewhere you own, not locked in one app. The real skill you are building, writing a good prompt, moves with you to any tool.
**Re-check now and then, not constantly.** Glance at the field a couple of times a year, not every week. Chasing every new model release is a great way to get nothing done.
