        - "Max 20x"
        - "Enterprise"

explain: "Pro is the daily driver for one regular user: the full set of models and features, plenty of headroom, one predictable price. Free is for trying it out; Max and Enterprise are more than a few-times-a-week user needs."
    - q: "You already live in Claude all day and keep hitting the limit on Pro. What is the cheapest sensible next step?"

explain: "This is the point from the safety lesson: the real divide is personal versus business. Business plans (Team, Enterprise) are no-training-by-default and come with the admin controls and agreements a company needs."
    - q: "On the Enterprise plan, what does the per-seat fee cover, and how is usage paid for?"
      options:
        - "The seat fee covers unlimited usage forever"

        - "There is no seat fee, only a flat monthly charge"
        - "Usage is free but access costs extra each time"
      answer: 1
explain: "Enterprise splits the two: the seat fee buys each person access, and every token the team actually uses is billed on top at standard API rates. Admins can set spend limits to keep it predictable."
    - q: "What is the smart way to start with a paid plan?"
      options:
        - "Buy the most expensive plan so you never hit a limit"
        - "Start free or on Pro, then move up only to the plan you actually outgrow"
        - "Buy every plan and compare them for a month"
        - "Never pay; the free tier is always enough for work"
      answer: 1

Picking a plan sounds like a big decision. It is not. There are five, they line up neatly from "just trying it" to "run it across a whole company", and for most people reading this the answer is one of the first two. This lesson gives you the honest version of each, so you pick once and get back to work.

One rule up front: **start small and move up only when you keep hitting a wall.** You cannot really pick wrong, because you can change plan any time. Buying the biggest plan "to be safe" just wastes money on headroom you will not use.

## The five plans, plainly

**Free.** Zero cost, limited use. You get real Claude, not a crippled demo: the everyday model (Sonnet) and the fast one (Haiku), enough for a handful of tasks a day. It is the right place to start and to find out whether Claude fits how you work. *Best for: trying it out and the occasional question.*

**Pro.** Around **20 dollars a month** (a bit less paid yearly). This is the one most professionals want. You get the full set of models, including the top one (Opus) for hard work, far more usage than Free, and the features that make Claude actually useful at work: Projects to keep your chats and files together, Claude Code, Cowork, and Claude for Microsoft 365. *Best for: one person using Claude regularly through the week.*

**Max.** **100 dollars a month** for 5x Pro's usage, or **200 dollars** for 20x, per five-hour session, with longer, uninterrupted sessions and higher output limits. It is the same Claude as Pro; you are buying *more* of it, not something smarter. *Best for: a solo power user who works with Claude most of the day and keeps hitting Pro's limit.*

**Team.** A paid plan for a group, from **25 dollars per person a month** (Standard seats; about 20 dollars paid yearly), with a heavier Premium seat above that. Minimum two members. On top of everything in Pro you get shared billing, admin controls, single sign-on, spend caps, connectors to your workplace tools (Google Drive, Gmail, GitHub, Microsoft 365, Slack), and, crucially, **your chats are not used for training by default.** *Best for: a team that wants one bill, some admin control, and business-grade data handling. Up to 150 seats.*

**Enterprise.** Custom pricing for a whole organisation. It includes everything in Team, plus the security and compliance a big company's IT team asks for: audit logs, custom data-retention rules, customer-managed encryption keys, US-only inference, and a HIPAA-ready option. Billing works differently here: **the seat fee buys access, and usage is billed separately at API rates**, with spend limits admins can set. *Best for: companies that need security sign-off, compliance, and Claude across many teams.*

## So which one is you?

**If you are one person, start on Free, then move to Pro.** That covers almost everyone reading this. Pro is the point where Claude stops being a toy you poke at and becomes a tool you lean on daily, and 20 dollars a month is the easiest business case you will ever make: it pays for itself the first afternoon it saves you an hour.

**Go to Max only when Pro genuinely runs out.** If you are in Claude for hours, running long jobs, or bumping the limit often enough that it interrupts your flow, Max buys you room. If you are not sure whether you need it, you do not yet. Wait for Pro to annoy you first.

**Choose Team when it is a group, not a person.** The moment two or more people need Claude, and someone wants one bill, some control over who has access, and the reassurance that chats are not training the model, Team earns its keep. It is also the cleanest way to give a small company business-grade data handling without a procurement project.

**Enterprise is an IT and security decision, not an individual one.** If your organisation needs audit logs, compliance certificates, data-residency guarantees, or single sign-on across hundreds of people, that is the conversation Enterprise is built for, and it is usually your IT or security team, not you, who signs it off.

## When is it worth moving up?

The honest signal is simple: **move up when the plan you are on gets in your way, and not a moment before.** Hitting the Pro limit twice a week is a nudge toward Max. Three colleagues asking to share your login is a nudge toward Team. Your security officer asking "where does our data go and can we prove it?" is a nudge toward Enterprise.

Everything below that is noise. You do not need the top plan to get top-quality answers; the writing and reasoning are the same. The higher plans sell you *more usage* and *more control*, not a cleverer Claude. Buy those when you feel their absence, not before.

## Try it

Answer four questions about yourself, in one line each. How often will you use Claude, daily or now and then? On your own, or with colleagues? Does your work involve data your company would not want training an outside model? Does anyone need to sign off on security?

Now read your answers back. If you are a solo, regular user with nothing especially sensitive, you are a Pro user, and you can stop overthinking it. If two of those answers point at "team" or "sensitive" or "sign-off", you are looking at Team or Enterprise. Write down the plan you land on and the one-line reason. That reason is the whole skill.

*(General exercise. Role and industry versions come once accounts are in.)*
