# Microsoft Copilot

> Microsoft's AI assistant, built into Windows and Microsoft 365 apps like Word, Excel, and Outlook.

**Category:** Tools

**Microsoft Copilot is Microsoft's AI assistant.** Its big draw is where it lives: inside Windows and the Microsoft 365 apps you may already use, Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams. It can act on your documents and emails in place.

Like the others it is a [generative AI](/glossary#generative-ai) tool. For businesses on Microsoft 365 it is often a paid add-on per user. The Academy focuses on [Claude](/glossary#claude), but Copilot is the natural fit for deep Microsoft shops.

## At work

In a Microsoft 365 shop, Copilot can summarise a Teams meeting or draft in Outlook without switching apps. That in-place reach is its main selling point.

## Often confused with

GitHub Copilot, the coding tool. They share a name, but Microsoft Copilot is the general work assistant; GitHub Copilot writes code.
