# ChatGPT

> OpenAI's AI chatbot, the tool that put generative AI in front of everyone. A capable, general-purpose assistant.

**ChatGPT is the AI chatbot made by OpenAI.** Launched in late 2022, it is the tool that made [generative AI](/glossary#generative-ai) mainstream. You chat with it much like [Claude](/glossary#claude): ask in plain language, get writing, answers, code, and more.

It is a strong all-rounder with a huge user base and a wide add-on ecosystem. The Academy focuses on Claude, but knowing the main tools helps you **pick the right one and avoid lock-in.**

## At work

Many teams meet AI through ChatGPT first. If a colleague sends you a ChatGPT prompt, it will usually work in Claude too: the skill of prompting carries across tools.

## Often confused with

OpenAI, the company. ChatGPT is the product; OpenAI is the maker. And ChatGPT is one tool, not a synonym for AI in general.
