# Artifact

> A piece of work Claude builds in its own panel, a document, table, chart, or small app, that you can keep, edit, and reuse.

**Category:** Claude

**An artifact is work Claude puts in its own panel**, beside the chat, instead of burying it in the conversation. Think a document, a table, a chart, a checklist, or a small single-page app. Because it sits on its own, you can **edit it in place, keep versions, download it, and reuse it later.**

A normal reply is fine for a quick answer you will read and move on from. Reach for an artifact when **you will edit, keep, or use the result outside the chat.**

## At work

Ask Claude to build a project checklist as an artifact. Tweak it over a few messages, then download it, instead of copying a plain reply out of the chat by hand.

## Often confused with

A normal reply. A reply lives in the [chat](/glossary#chat) and scrolls away; an artifact is a separate, editable piece you keep.
